Girls not Brides

GirlsNotBrides-LogoChild marriage could become law in Iraq this week, but it’s a global scourge
My organisation is fighting to secure the right of every child to be at school. It’s the only way to stop this barbaric practice

Girl brides

When Iraqi voters go to the polls tomorrow they are likely to endorse parties that plan to legalise child marriage at nine years old. Based on Shia Islamic jurisprudence, what is called the Ja’afari personal status law was approved by the current Iraqi cabinet eight weeks ago. It describes girls as reaching puberty at nine, and therefore ready for marriage. The current legal age is 18…….

The facts are that the one secure way to prevent child marriage is to deliver the right of every child to be at school. A girl with some education is not only unlikely to be married at eight, nine or 10, but is also six times less likely to be married by 18.

Child marriage-free zones, where girls get together and refuse to be married, are springing up on the subcontinent – the first in Pakistan, with several now in Bangladesh, and others soon to be set up in countries such as Malawi. We see that girls are no longer prepared to succumb to the fate that others have decided for them, or to wait for others to protect them.

Together with a group of high profile individuals I am proud to be part of the Emergency Coalition for Education Action. The coalition is committed to zero education exclusion, and this means zero child marriage. We are linking up with girls’ rights movements across the developing world, including Nepal’s Common Forum for Kalmal Hari Freedom, the Nilphamari Child Marriage Free Zone in Bangladesh, the Ugandan Child Protection Club, and Indonesia’s Grobogan Child Empowerment Group.

Many are linked to the growing Girls not Brides movement spearheaded by Princess Mabel van Oranje of the Netherlands – more than 300 national organisations are already affiliated. They are attempting to stop child marriage by law, to register girls by their correct ages, to enforce existing banning regulations, and to get girls to school.

Children’s rights must be protected across the world, and we call on all countries to put an end to the barbaric practice of child marriage and to ensure all children are in school and learning.

10 pence Tax Abolished! Gordon Brown (PM) dances for hearts and minds

With bar room economics.

“This is a short-term political fix. It has done enormous long-term damage to any reputation he had for economic competence.”

He went on: “I think [people] see a government that has abandoned the founding principles of New Labour, which were that you get away from the emergency budgets of the Denis Healey era, that you did not fight class war campaigns and that you tried to occupy the middle ground.”

Words of George Osbourne, shadow chancellor (for those of you not familiar with UK politics. George is on the opposition side of the the House of Commons. The Labour party, which used to be left of centre and the party in power with the Conservative  part in opposition who used to be right of centre similar to Republicans in US).

Even Alistair Darling the current chancellor admits the 10p tax abolition “could have been handled better” according to the Telegraph.

Under plans announced yesterday, the Treasury will borrow 2.7 billion to fund a 120 pound (approx 240 USD) tax cut for all basic-rate taxpayers. Mr Darling said the scheme would not fuel inflation and insisted Government borrowing rules would not be broken. It will only be offered this year.

Interestingly David Cameron ( leader of the Conservative party) possibly had the clearest observation.

[….] told Mr Brown: “Yesterday we all paid £2.7 billion to keep you in your job.”

Perhaps it’s not all bad news;

Defending Brown from claims that he is now the most unpopular prime minister in Labour history, Balls insisted that he prime minister could claw back from the role of villain to a figure of respect, just as famous sportsmen do. “These are times when politicians in most governments get tested and you find out whether you are strong, ideologically divided or united,” he said. “You sort out those people that can look forward, rather than backwards, and put the national interest first”.

Then this wee tale might just help. Got it in an email from a friend, who does not want to be named. Therefore, Source Unknown.

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten
comes to £100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would
go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay £1.
The sixth would pay £3.
The seventh would pay £7.
The eighth would pay £12.
The ninth would pay £18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay £59.

So, that's what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the
arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are
all such good customers,' he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your
daily beer by £20.' Drinks for the ten now cost just £80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the
first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free.
But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could
they divide the £20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair

They realized that £20 divided by six is £3.33. But if they
subtracted that from everyone's share, then the fifth man and the
sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar
owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by
roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts
each should pay.

And so:

The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid £2 instead of £3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay £5 instead of £7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid £9 instead of £12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid £14 instead of £18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid £49 instead of £59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four
continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men
began to compare their savings.

'I only got a pound out of the £20,' declared the sixth man. He
pointed to the tenth man, 'but he got £10!'

'Yes, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a pound,
too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I did'

'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get £10 back
when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks'

'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison.
'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor'

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine
sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the
bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough
money between all of them for even half of the bill.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists and college professors,
is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get
the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them
for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact,
they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat

The Aged, The Impoverished Poor and Women have

one thing in common.

They are the power base of Hilary Clinton and Clintonland voters. And, how could I forget, one other extremely crucial unifying factor; they are all white!

Yes, WHITE! as though it should matter, but it does.

Sad, that in this day and age, the demarcations still fall along the lines of skin-tone.

They are also the ones’ who will end up bringing another Republican nutter into the White House.  IF, and a bloody big if, they carry on as though they are blinkered lemmings.

Maybe, it would do them well to heed the advice on this cartoon image!

As an aside; like, the conversation with a drunk at the bar.

Q: Why do lemmings jump off cliffs. Myth or fact?

A: Here

You are probably wondering why should it matter for someone in the UK.  Well, because it matters to the whole world.

Who is going to undo the damage of the Blair-Bush madness, it’s not Gordon Brown is it?

Timesonline has an interesting article

Hillary Clinton risks rift in Democrats by ‘cheating’ black voters

Hillary Clinton is pinning her hopes on the party’s superdelegates to gift her the nomination. But America’s most senior black congressman warns she is playing with fire and could force a split in the Democrats.

…But Clyburn, who has yet to endorse either candidate, believes this path would be suicidal for the Democrats. African-Americans were not the only ones who would feel betrayed, he said. “Barack Obama has brought in a lot of young voters for the first time, and they’ll feel cheated too.” Many Clinton supporters are equally adamant that their candidate must win because white Americans are not going to elect a black president. Either way, Democrats are on a collision course.

“When it comes down to it, they are not going to vote for a black man,” said Jim Whitworth, 43, who wore a Harley-Davidson motorcycle T-shirt and a chestful of Hillary for President buttons to a Clinton rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He said the more he learnt about Obama, the more he found him “scary”.

“I don’t feel like I’m a racist, but this country is. People say they will vote for a black person, but when they get to the polls they won’t.”

Embryo Bill Draws Christian and Muslim

Whenever religion gets involved in rational debate, the language is always infused with terminolgy designed to effect an emotive response.

Is that because religion is primarily involved in the emotional, rather than the rational centres of the brain?

At first sight a piece of text  looks innocent, but please take a look at the argument against by religious doctors that commends the support of Muslims and Christian joining forces against the Embryo Bill that Gordon Brown, our UK Prime Minister is being slated in the press.

While Gordon Brown offers a free vote over certain issues of the new embryology bill there is something that needs clarifying – the use of language in the debate.

People seem to think that manipulating cells which are less than a fly is immoral compared to delaying advances in medical treatment that could help millions of humans with the capacity to suffer and die from terminal diseases. Ethically there is no issue – embryo’s have no capacity to suffer, yet research could lead to breakthroughs and help people who do. To delay such research in such circumstances is not about morality – it is the height of ignorance and turning a blind eye to the suffering of others.

SO when people say it is a moral issue, make it clear it is about helping people with Parkinson’s, MS, cancer and many other things that effect millions of people. To treat an embryo as more significant then these people is not only immoral, but something that gives credence to the saying that it takes religion to make good people do bad things.

British Muslims Fully Support Catholic Leaders In Their Opposition To The Embryo Bill, UK (copied full extract)

Muslims, as well as many Christians, MPs, doctors and parents, are very concerned about the new EMBRYO BILL, which will shortly be voted on in the House of Commons.
The bill, called The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, will if enacted allow for many immoral, inhumane and undesirable procedures and outcomes.

Effects of the bill in summary:

– The main effect of the bill is to extend the power of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to authorise procedures that will harm or kill embryos created in the laboratory.

– It proposes to sanction new abuses of human embryos.

– The bill extends the ways in which embryos can be artificially created and manipulated – including hybrid (animal-human) embryos, genetic manipulation, etc.

– The bill is designed to make it easier to change the law in future to extend objectionable procedures like cloning.

If passed into law the bill would;

– Allow the production of a Hybrid, a new interspecies embryo for experimentation. This is blasphemous in Islam. It is ‘monstrous’ and is opposed by all believers in GOD, the only Creator, the only Designer. The unique divine process of fertilisation and human creation is SACRED and can not be used or changed for any reason. It is against the dignity of man, as stated by the Cardinal Keith O’Brien. GOD Almighty has chosen man above all the creation.

– Weaken the stress on the welfare of the IVF child, with the removal of the requirement to consider the child’s need for a father.

– Undermine marriage and family values.(‘recognising same-sex couples as legal parents of children conceived through the use of donated sperm, eggs or embryos’ )

– Destroy a large number of embryos.

– Discriminate against embryos with some disabilities.

– Allow couples who have a disabled child undergo IVF in the hope of producing a baby (saviour sibling) who can be used as a tissue donor to treat the older sibling. Whatever the motivation of parents, this usually entails discarding and destroying many embryos.

– Extend the general scope of in vitro fertilisation (IVF), regarding it not only as a treatment for infertile couples, but for others who demand their purported “right” to have a child. (IVF is already allowed, of course, for people who want to fit childbearing around other lifestyle choices – career or relationships: the changes in the bill mean this could become much more common.)

– Allow the use of people’s cells to ‘create’ embryos without consent. The requirement of the existing embryology law for consent before gametes are taken from a person is weakened in the bill. It will become permissible in certain circumstances for the gametes (sperm and eggs) of children and those who are unconscious to be extracted without their consent having been given. Such proposals weaken the principle of consent, which was given strong emphasis in the original embryo legislation in 1990.

For the last few months, Muslims and mosques in Britain have been writing to both Members of the House of Lords and the House of Commons, requesting them to oppose this bill as it is:

– Unethical, inhumane, immoral and against GOD and all the Holy Scriptures.
– Dangerous, as it undermines marriage and family values and deprives the innocent child from a father.
– Misleading to the public…as there is no evidence that embryonic stem cell research is going to help in the cure of any diseases.

Unfortunately spokesmen from the Government and from the media, who support the bill, have been holding up the hope of embryonic stem cell research finding a cure or a treatment for many serious diseases as a reason for passing the bill. In reality this is not based on any fact or evidence.

We all are in favour of medical research, which can find treatments and cures for diseases and conditions, however, this research must be ethical, humane, safe, moral and effective and blessed by GOD the Creator. This bill is none of these.

Today we have an ethical and effective alternative: research using adult stem cells. These are ‘created’ from cells taken from the patient or from placenta or cord blood, not from embryos. The taking of these ‘adult’ cells does not cause the death of an embryo in order to do medical research to find treatments or the cures for diseases .

this method does not undermines human dignity and does not abuse the sacredness of human creation.

Muslims believe that for every disease there is a cure which is ethical, safe and effective, but unfortunately many doctors and scientists are not moving in the right direction!

Finally, British Muslims fully support the Catholic Leaders, Ministers and MPs in their opposition to this, the worst Bill in the history of Britain, they will continue with their letter campaign to the MPs in order to oppose this inhumane, destructive and immoral bill.

This bill should not have been presented to Parliament in the first place, however the least we can do now is to demand a free vote on the whole of this bill for all MPs.
